It’s very good at learning from bad experiences, but very bad at learning from good

face — never. You experience a perfectly, delightful dinner out with friends, but at one point your waiter responds to
your simple request in a surly manner. What do you remember about that entire evening? The surly waiter. And you

This is called the Negativity Bias. Negative experiences can stay with us forever, but most good experiences bounce
off your brain almost immediately. There’s a good reason for this.
Enemies or saber toothed tigers . . .
Dr. Rick Hanson, Ph.D., a neuropsychologist, of Berkeley, CA says “Our ancestors paid a lot of attention to negative
things and experiences, because if they didn’t they wouldn’t survive very long. There could be an enemy or a saber
toothed tiger ready to pounce on them at any time, and so their negative radar constantly scanned their surroundings
for danger every waking minute.”
Our brains have evolved, and for most of us, we live in relatively safe environments, but we still have this negative bias
that locks onto every negative thing that happens and it adversely affects our ability to experience maximum
Negative experiences overwhelm and cancel happy ones
Here’s an example: A group of classical music lovers participated in a university study where they listened to a 20-
minute recording of their favorite classical music. Afterwards, they were asked to rate their experience on a happiness
scale from 1 to 10. The average score was 8. They were ‘very’ happy.
Then the study was repeated with another group. This time they listened to 19-minutes of their favorite music, but the
final minute contained an annoying screeching sound over the music. This group rated their happiness level at a 3.
The fact that they had 19 minutes of pure happiness and only 1 minute of negative annoyance didn’t matter. The 1
negative minute completely cancelled out the other 19 minutes of happiness and it was the only thing the participants
could remember and share about the experience. Negative experiences overwhelm and cancel happy ones.
And this happens to all of us every day. Life is filled with small, medium and large negative experiences that can easily
cancel out larger, and expecially smaller positive experiences. Neuro science has discovered that you need five
times as many positive experiences to counter one negative experience.
